What is mole mapping?

Mole mapping is a comprehensive, non-invasive procedure used to monitor and track moles and other skin lesions on the body over time. It is commonly performed to aid in the early detection of skin cancer, particularly melanoma. Here’s how it typically works:

  1. Photography and Imaging: A dermatologist takes high-resolution, full-body photographs or digital scans of the skin. This process captures detailed images of all moles and skin lesions across the body.
  2. Documentation: Each mole is documented, noting its size, shape, color, and location. Some advanced mole mapping systems use dermatoscopic imaging to capture magnified images of specific moles for more detailed analysis.
  3. Tracking Changes: The images and data from the initial session serve as a baseline. During follow-up visits, new images are taken to compare with the baseline. This helps detect any changes in existing moles or the appearance of new moles over time.
  4. Early Detection: By observing changes in moles, such as asymmetry, border irregularities, color variations, diameter growth, and evolution over time (known as the ABCDEs of melanoma), dermatologists can identify potential warning signs of skin cancer at an earlier, more treatable stage.

Mole mapping is particularly beneficial for individuals with numerous moles, a history of skin cancer, or other risk factors for melanoma. It provides a visual record that can alert both patients and dermatologists to subtle changes that might otherwise go unnoticed.
